Overpromising on uptime is a big red flag, Stewart said. 99.999 percent uptime, or around five and a half minutes of downtime a year, is very costly to maintain as it requires at least two full systems running side by side in separate locations. For the vast majority of businesses, 99.99 percent uptime, or around an hour a year of downtime, is much more reasonable.
