In the relationship between the CIO and CMO, the CMO has to yield responsibility when it comes to security, Dawson said. The CIO and IT need to be willing to shut down and take control of insecure uses of technology. Dawson said the IT department has permission to do this as part of their job, but many of them don't. 
"If it's not tying into IT and mutual success you’ve got to be willing to shut it down," Dawson said.
A way to shut down areas of IT without angering the CMO is to set clear policies around IT and sticking to them. After giving a reasonable window for departments to get compliant, IT has full reign to take action and secure the company's technology.
