Through 2021, more than half of the total IT services spending increase of $200 billion will go toward digital-related services, Gartner predicts.

And it won't come from the IT organization, says Allie Young. "The CEOs are driving the digital agenda," she says, and two-thirds of them say their companies will invest more in digital capabilities over the next two years.

The stakes here are apparently high, as more than 40 percent of Gartner clients the company speaks with said they bank on service providers, Tramacere said. "They need you."

"Your mindset needs to change," Young added. "You need to be proactive; you need to understand the digital and business needs of your clients, not just their IT needs."
