Executives at Mandiant, the digital forensics arm of security vendor FireEye, called the Sony Pictures breach "unprecedented" and indicated that the malware used in the attack would not have been detected by standard antivirus.  The group behind the attack reportedly used destructive malware, wiping the hard drive and the boot loader, making systems virtually unrecoverable. An emerging class of advanced threat detection and breach detection platforms are available and can inspect both network traffic and endpoint systems for subtle signs of an infection.
