Symantec, Intel Security (formerly McAfee), and other endpoint security vendors have strong whole disk encryption offerings associated with their endpoint security platforms. Others include Alert Boot, which offers a SaaS-based encryption offering and Seagate, which sells a line of self-encrypting drives. Key management continues to be a complicated problem at organizations. Security experts say most deployments have been limited in scope around a key group of personnel and specific critical data sources. A significant number of lost or stolen mobile devices and laptops that have triggered data breach notification rules continues to be a concern at organizations. Deploying encryption across the entire organization can cause disruption with systems taking a performance hit when required to encrypt and decrypt data. But the Ponemon Survey found that data breaches targeting intellectual property and other high-value data have forced attention to turn to full disk and media encryption to satisfy compliance and data breach reporting requirements.
