1 Encryption For Data At Rest
Encrypting data at rest was identified as the top technology projected to increase over the next three years. Symantec, Intel Security (formerly McAfee), and other endpoint security vendors have strong whole disk encryption offerings associated with their endpoint security platforms. Others include Alert Boot, which offers a SaaS-based encryption offering and Seagate, which sells a line of self-encrypting drives. Key management continues to be a complicated problem at organizations. Security experts say most deployments have been limited in scope around a key group of personnel and specific critical data sources. A significant number of lost or stolen mobile devices and laptops that have triggered data breach notification rules continues to be a concern at organizations. Deploying encryption across the entire organization can cause disruption with systems taking a performance hit when required to encrypt and decrypt data. But the Ponemon Survey found that data breaches targeting intellectual property and other high-value data have forced attention to turn to full disk and media encryption to satisfy compliance and data breach reporting requirements.
