Web-based attacks continue to be the primary delivery method of most attacks, with campaigns designed to exploit website vulnerabilities to set up an attack platform for visitors. The Web application firewall technology was first seen as an easy way to meet compliance requirements. They were initially poorly configured and rarely properly maintained. But in recent years, Imperva, F5 Networks, Trustwave and other security vendors have built a strong customer base that is proactively maintaining their WAF deployments, minimizing false positives while protecting critical Web servers. The WAF market grew as much as 30 percent in 2013 according to Gartner. The research firm said WAFs delivered as a cloud service or as a hosted virtual appliance are gaining the most significant growth.
