RightScale rates users on one of four levels of cloud maturity: Cloud Watchers, Cloud Beginners, Cloud Explorers and Cloud Focused.

"When comparing cloud adoption in large and small companies, it is interesting to note that enterprise respondents are more heavily clustered in the middle stages of Cloud Beginners and
Cloud Explorers," the report notes.

RightScale found that over the last year, many of those large companies have advanced to the Cloud Explorers stage, meaning they have multiple projects and applications already deployed in the cloud. In 2014, 25 percent of enterprise respondents were Explorers; in 2015, the number climbed to 38 percent.

Only three percent of enterprises polled said they don't have any plans to employ cloud resources.
