Stephens knew he didn't want Geek Squad members looking like normal retail employees, whose uniform normally consists of just a polo shirt and chinos.
He initially considered Blues Brothers–style suits, but ultimately realized the uptake and cleaning would be too expensive.
Inspiration came to Stephens while he was watching Apollo 13 and realized that NASA was a perfect metaphor for Geek Squad in terms of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. So he copied their uniform of short-sleeve shirts and narrow black ties.
"The only people who have been complaining about our uniforms are the Mormons," Stephens said.
